Associates at a Home Depot location in Philadelphia reportedly voted against joining a union in a 165-51 vote, according to Reuters. The union, Home Depot Workers United, had sought to address concerns regarding wages, staffing and training.
Home Depot Workers United also has filed an unfair labor practices complaint against Home Depot for engaging in unlawful surveillance and interrogating workers at the Philadelphia store, according to the union. A Home Depot spokesperson told Reuters that the retailer will cooperate with the NLRB in the investigation and is confident that it did not commit the alleged violations.
The Home Depot effort is one of two union votes to fail in recent months, the other being at an Amazon fulfillment center in Castleton, N.Y. in October. Workers at the Amazon facility also voted solidly against unionization, at 406 to 206.
However, Apple had its second successful pro-union vote in October at a store in Oklahoma City. The Starbucks union also is continuing to grow: nearly 250 stores have voted to organize, winning approximately 80% of the 300 elections held so far, with more elections scheduled for the coming months, according to NPR.
