“Technical Issues” Hit Global Retailers

Bloomberg reports that in the UK, both Tesco and J Sainsbury suffered disruptions over the weekend caused by “technical disruptions.”

According to the story, “J Sainsbury Plc, the country’s second-largest grocer, experienced ‘issues’ with contactless payments and won’t be able to deliver the ‘vast majority’ of the day’s online orders … Sainsbury’s Chief Executive Officer Simon Roberts wrote to a customer in a letter seen by Bloomberg News that ‘all of our stores are open as usual today and accepting chip and pin and cash payments while we resolve the issue’.

“Meanwhile, Tesco Plc, Britain’s biggest grocer, was forced by a ‘technical issue’ to cancel some online orders that were due for delivery. ‘The vast majority of our online orders are being delivered as normal, but due to a technical issue earlier today we have had to cancel a small number,’ a spokesperson for the company told Bloomberg News in an email.”

At the same time, the Associated Press reports that “system failures at McDonald’s were reported worldwide Friday, shuttering some restaurants for hours and leading to social media complaints from customers, in what the fast food chain called a ‘technology outage’ that was being fixed … McDonald’s Corp. said the problems were not related to a cybersecurity attack, without giving more details on what caused them.

“‘We are aware of a technology outage, which impacted our restaurants; the issue is now being resolved,’ the burger giant said in a statement.”

KC’s View:

Two major companies being hit with similar problems might be a coincidence.  But three?

I’m not sure I’d go so far to say there is a conspiracy afoot, but I think we’re all living in an environment in which we can’t help but worry about larger forces at work.
