The RealReal Powers Up its Consignment Business with Digital ID Integration

The RealReal is incorporating Eon digital IDs to streamline its consignment process.

Luxury resale marketplace The RealReal has partnered with digital ID platform Eon and joined its Eon Exchange, an ecosystem of integrated apps, partners and services. Through this integration, The RealReal hopes to streamline the process of consigning items on its marketplace.

Owners of luxury fashion items from Eon’s network of brand partners will be able to scan their item to access its history, including provenance and previous sale history, and will now be given the option to consign with The RealReal. If the item is accepted, The RealReal will then do the rest of the work — including taking possession of the item, authenticating and photographing it, determining a price and listing the item —and then leveraging data from the item’s digital ID as an additional verification step.

“Our mission at The RealReal is not only to extend the life of luxury items, but also to remove friction from the consignment process and boost the adoption of resale as much as possible,” said Rati Sahi Levesque, President and COO of The RealReal in a statement. “This partnership is far bigger than The RealReal. Together, we’re getting consumers and brands alike to understand the power of resale and keep well-made items in circulation. By joining Eon Exchange, we’re increasing the adoption of resale, offering a seamless consignor experience to its community while adding another layer of trust to our marketplace and to the resale industry as a whole.”

The growing Eon Exchange ecosystem integrates technologies from dozens of companies, including sustainability measurement organizations such as Carbon Trail, Green Story and Worldly; sustainability certifiers such as Cradle to Cradle Certified and Bluesign; logistics companies such as Bleckmann and Tersus Solutions; digital wardrobe solutions such as SOJO and Save Your Wardrobe; and data carriers, label and chip makers such as Checkpoint Systems, Nexgen Packaging, SML Group and Finotex.

In addition to streamlining the consignment process, The RealReal’s partnership with Eon also will give the company a head start in preparing for the upcoming implementation of the European Union’s Digital Product Passports (DPP) regulation, which will require products in upwards of 30 categories to have a “data carrier” that contains information about the product’s history and sustainability credentials. Implementation of the DPP requirement will be rolled out in a staggered fashion from 2026 to 2030, beginning with batteries.
