The Innovation Conversation:  E-Grocery 3.0

The continuing goal of “The Innovation Conversation” is to explore some facet of the fast-changing, technology-driven retail landscape and how it affects businesses and consumers. It is, we think, fertile territory … and one that Tom Furphy – a former Amazon executive who led the team that developed Amazon Fresh, and currently CEO and Managing Director of Consumer Equity Partners (CEP), a venture capital and venture development firm in Seattle, WA, that works with many top retailers and manufacturers – is uniquely positioned to address.

Today, Tom and KC preview one of the subjects that will be part of the Technology Innovation track at the upcoming National Grocers Association (NGA) show in Las Vegas.  The premise is simple: E-Grocery 1.0 was everything that happened pre-pandemic, and E-Grocery 2.0 was when everything went into warp speed, with retailers making fast decisions because of the circumstances.

E-Grocery 3.0 is now – retailers have the opportunity to reconsider past moves, become more strategic than tactical, and make decisions that may be more in line with their brands and value propositions.  But the one thing they can’t do is be complacent – the urgency of the pandemic may be behind us, but there remains a competitive necessity to think – and act – on these issues.
