Newegg Expands Resale Offering with ‘Refreshed’ Program for Electronics, Appliances

Online electronics and appliance marketplace Newegg is making a big push into resale with the debut of Newegg Refreshed, a refurbishment program for pre-owned products.

Among the product categories now available in refurbished condition on Newegg are Apple products (iPhone, iPad and MacBook) and Advanced Battlestations (ABS) gaming desktop PC systems, as well as other brands of computer monitors, laptops, tablets, mobile phones and robotic vacuums.

Newegg’s graphics card (GPU) trade-in program, which launched in September 2023, is also now part of Newegg Refreshed. The program allows users to offset the cost of buying a new graphics card; customers buy their new card and then have 14 days to send in their old one. These cards are then resold after being inspected. Additionally, Newegg customers can now trade in their unwanted PC hardware.

A number of refurbishing partners are aiding the expansion of Newegg Refreshed into these additional product categories, including ABS, Likewize, Back in the Box, CTS Warehouse Store, Focus Camera and iRobot. Newegg and its partners professionally inspect, test, clean and refurbish products to ensure they are fully functional. All products are then backed by the Newegg Refreshed Guarantee, which allows customers to return refurbished items for a refund or replacement within 90 days.

“We’re focused on expanding our Refreshed categories to offer our customers both great value and peace of mind when they choose like-new or refurbished products,” said Andrew Choi, Director of Brand Marketing and Web Experience at Newegg in a statement. “We’re launching a program that offers customers additional ways to save, whether in the form of Newegg Refreshed products or trade-in credit, while promoting sustainability.”

The resale sector continues to pick up steam, with new entrants, particularly in the fashion category, arriving regularly.. Refurbishment programs for hard goods have been less prominent, perhaps because it is a more mature market: Apple, for example, has had a refurbishment and resale program in place for many years.

However, retailers are increasingly getting into the refurbishment game themselves as buying secondhand grows in popularity across all categories. Walmart launched a refurbishment program in 2022 and expanded its assortment last year. Ebay also expanded its assortment of refurbished electronics and appliances in late 2021 and continues to expand the program.
