Asda raids rival grocery retailer Morrisons to bring in Matt Kelleher as new Chief Digital Officer

Asda has confirmed the appointment of its first Chief Digital Officer as it focuses on evolving how it uses data to improve its customer offer, part of an ambition to be the UK’s second largest grocery retailer (a position currently held by Sainsbury’s).

Matt Kelleher will join the supermarket in July from rival Morrisons, where he has held the role of Chief Information Officer.

In his new role, he will take on responsibility for Asda’s data and e-commerce functions. He will also lead all of the retailer’s technology functions once its ongoing tech transformation project ‘Future’ is complete.

He will join Asda’s executive leadership team led by co-owner Mohsin Issa.

Asda has also announced the appointment of Atheeq Akbar as VP, Commercial Finance. He will join in June, reporting to Michael Gleeson.

Issa says: “This is an incredibly exciting time to be part of Asda as our business grows and develops for the benefit of our customers.”

“Our use of data and technology transformation is a critical element of our ongoing transformation and I am delighted that we continue to attract new talent and skills as we progress this important work. I look forward to welcoming Matt and Atheeq to the Asda family.”

NCR Atleos

Asda recently selected NCR Atleos as its ATM network partner.

Its customers will soon be able to transact with over 1,200 Cashzone branded Atleos owned and operated ATMs in more than 600 stores.

According to a press release: “By selecting the proven experts at Atleos to provide an end-to-end ATM solution, Asda will reduce complexity and boost efficiency, while providing optimum availability and access for customers”.

It will also leverage Atleos’ onscreen marketing at the ATM to promote its brand, offers and services.

“By implementing Atleos ATMs, we will deliver a convenient cash access experience for our over 18 million weekly shoppers,” says Neil Foster, Head of Asda Money at Asda.

“Allowing simple access to cash and more services in the future is a top priority for us. We’re really excited about the Atleos vision on how to quickly introduce new innovation to further support our customers.”

“We partnered with Atleos for their proven track record of success, and together we look forward to facilitating stronger, more rewarding customer experiences.”

“Asda understands the importance and power of consumer choice. By utilising Atleos’ ATM network, this leading retailer is enabling customers to access cash services when and where they prefer,” says Diego Navarrete, Executive Vice President, Global Sales at Atleos.

“Plus, they are simultaneously creating new revenue streams to support business goals. We are excited to expand our partnership with Asda, enabling convenient self-service banking and strategically planning for future innovations.”
