DG pilots mobile health clinics

GOODLETTSVILLE, Tenn. – Dollar General is introducing mobile health care services via a trial program with partner DocGo Inc.

DocGo On-Demand clinics, hosted in vans in store parking lots, are staffed by clinicians who can perform tests, prescribe medications, provide urgent care and treat common ailments in adults and children.

Dollar General said customers can drop by the DocGo On-Demand mobile clinics or schedule an appointment online or over the phone.

Mobile clinics are being introduced this week at three Dollar General locations in central Tennessee. The clinics represent an expansion of the retailer’s DG Wellbeing initiative, introduced in 2021 to serve residents of rural communities typically beyond the reach of retail pharmacy and big box chains also competing to deliver health services to consumers.

The launch of DG Wellbeing coincided with the hiring of the company’s first chief medical officer, Dr. Albert Wu.

DG Wellbeing was initially focused on offering a broader array of health care products at Dollar General stores, with 30% more feet of selling space and up to 400 additional items compared to what was offered at standard locations, according to Jeff Owen, Dollar General’s chief executive officer.

The expanded DG Wellbeing product offering was available at 2,700 stores at the end of July, Owen said during the retailer’s second-quarter earnings call, and the company was on track to have it in more than 4,000 stores by year’s end.

“During the quarter, we announced the establishment of a new Healthcare Advisory Panel, which recently convened its first quarterly meeting,” Owen said on the August 25 call.

Dollar General operated 18,566 stores in 47 states at the end of the second quarter. In addition to high-quality private brands, Dollar General sells products from America’s most-trusted manufacturers such as Clorox, Energizer, Procter & Gamble, Hanes, Coca-Cola, Mars, Unilever, Nestle, Kimberly-Clark, Kellogg’s, General Mills, and PepsiCo.
