Thursday Eye-Opener:  Progress?

by Kevin Coupe

You may have noticed in recent weeks a commercial for Instacart that features a man being able to place his grocery order from a remote location:

Clever ad.  Though, as it happens, not all that different from a TV commercial from a quarter century ago that thematically was exactly the same – featuring the then-new e-grocery service called Peapod.

I have a number of reactions to this.  One is that it tells us exactly how far ahead of their time Andrew Parkinson and Thomas Parkinson, the guys who invented Peapod, were.  (Full disclosure:  Their newest venture, Sifter, is an MNB Charter Sponsor.  And, for the record, I think Sifter is every bit as innovation-forward as Peapod was.)

I think it also tells us the degree to which Ahold squandered Peapod’s first-mover advantages after it acquired the brand.

Here’s my question:  What will the next iteration of e-grocery be?

The answer will need to be Eye-Opening.
