New York State May Force Some Chick-fil-A Units To Open On Sunday

USA Today reports that new legislation being considered by the New York State legislature could force Chick-fil-A restaurants located on highway rest stops to be open on Sundays.

Chick-fil-A has a longstanding tradition of being closed on Sundays;  it is part of the company’s value system to allow employees to take the day off to spend time with their families and/or in religious activities.

According to the story, “Bill A08336, introduced in New York, would require all food services at transportation facilities and rest areas to remain open seven days a week.”

KC’s View:

I would suspect that Chick-fil-A would pull out of those rest stop locations permanently rather than violate a core principle.  Which I respect.

The governing authority that oversees the state’s highway rest stops knew that Chick-fil-A closes on Sunday when they contracted to allow the company tio operate there.  If they want to make Sunday opening a condition of the next contract, fine.  But lawmakers stepping in here to essentially change the terms of an existing contract strikes me as shortsighted, leaving the state open to legal action.
