A Changing Of The Guard In The Workplace

Axios reports that “Gen Zers are expected to overtake baby boomers in the U.S. workforce by early next year, per a new analysis of census data from Glassdoor.”

The story suggests that “the workplace is giving more Gen Z energy — and if you don’t understand what that means, it’s time to bone up on the younger generation’s lingo and work style.

“Between the lines: The work world will surely adapt to Gen Z’s ways, as it once did for Gen X (which pushed for more work-life balance) and for millennials (who brought us job hopping and, of course, avocado toast).

“Still, Gen Z will have to wait a while before it asserts control. Millennials will dominate the workforce until the early 2040s, per Glassdoor’s estimates.”

KC’s View:

This is both natural and inevitable.  Every generation ages out of the workforce.

What’s unusual may be the degree to which succeeding generations differ in terms of priorities and outlooks from those that preceded them, which means that leaders need to be a lot more nimble about refashioning their workplaces to make them attractive and amenable to younger people.
