Thursday Eye-Opener:  A New Billy Joel Pop Song

by Kevin Coupe

Billy Joel hasn’t put out a new song in more than a dozen years, and his last original album, “River of Dreams,” came out in 1993.  That’s not to say he’s been loafing – Joel has had an enormously successful residency at Madison Square Garden, playing something like 100 shows over the past decade.  (It is a wonderful concert – I totally recommend it.)

But now, he is out with a new song, “Turn The Lights Back On,” which debuted this morning and that he reportedly will perform live on the Grammys this weekend.

“Turn The Lights Back On” sounds like a four-minute apology for ignoring his wife, but it is a terrific song, Joel sounds in great form, and at least for those of us who grew up on Billy Joel songs like “Piano Man,” “Uptown Girl,” “New York State of Mind,” “The Stranger” and “Only The Good Die Young,” it is a welcome return.

I know this doesn’t have anything to do with retailing.  Or business.  But Eye-Openers come in many forms, and in this case, it is the delight of waking up and hearing an iconic voice and a new song. And you can listen to it here.
