CINCINNATI — The Kroger Co. has expanded shopping access for participants of SNAP, the Supplement Nutrition Assistance Program, who can now make electronic EBT payments when ordering online from the retailer’s supermarket banners.
Kroger said it engaged in a months-long collaboration with the U.S. Department of Agriculture Food and Nutrition Service to enable electronic benefits transfer (EBT) payments, allowing shoppers to use EBT payments on orders through the Kroger app or the company’s website. The company notes that it also participated in a USDA pilot on EBT payments during the pandemic.
“We believe everyone should have access to fresh, affordable and nutritious food,” Rodney McMullen, Kroger’s chairman and CEO, said in a statement announcing the move. “I am so proud of our passionate teams who worked closely with the USDA to remove barriers to healthy foods so that more of America can access the food they need to thrive.”
Additonally, Kroger said, customers can use the Kroger OptUP nutrition rating system to explore nutrition facts and options for healthy eating. OptUP is free and accessible through the Kroger app or at Kroger.com. Customers can view nutrition scores for favorite items, explore better-for-you alternatives, and shop items that are aligned to specialized diets.
To begin making EBT payments online, customers create an account at the website or on the app, using their EBT number. They can then fill a cart with SNAP-eligible items, and select a time for pickup or delivery. Once in the checkout screen, they select EBT as the payment method and enter the PIN to confirm the order.
