Walgreens issues statement on Mifepristone

DEERFIELD, Ill. — Walgreens has issued a statement on the drug Mifepristone, after California Gov. Gavin Newsom said that the state will no longer do business with Walgreens because of its recent decision not to distribute abortion medication by mail in 20 U.S. states.

“We want to be very clear about what our position has always been: Walgreens plans to dispense Mifepristone in any jurisdiction where it is legally permissible to do so,” the company stated. “Once we are certified by the FDA, we will dispense this medication consistent with federal and state laws. Providing legally approved medications to patients is what pharmacies do, and is rooted in our commitment to the communities in which we operate.”

Walgreens said last week that it would not dispense abortion pills by mail in the states of 20 Republican attorneys general who told the pharmacy chain it risked breaking the law should it do so.
