Daily QuickWit (8/19) – Top Retail News of the Day

from a study conducted by Earnest Research

Here are the top stories we are talking about today at RetailWit HQ:

Looking to track how many workers are returning to the office? Look no further than the Starbucks foot traffic metric (pictured at the top), that is measuring foot traffic in the coffee chain in dense urban areas – where you would expect to get a lot of foot traffic from those who work in the area. Interesting to see the trends within the various markets.

The Delta variant is being cited as a major factor in retail sales declining in July. We certainly hate to speculate on where this might be headed, but we are really hoping this is not a “here we go again”.

We have a double story from Macy’s, as they have a solid quarter and announce a new partnership:

They topped earnings estimates as online business brings in new customers

Toys R Us will be opening “pint sized” shops inside 400 Macy’s stores next year

And in another earnings announcement, TJX (parent company of T.J. Maxx, Marshalls & Home Goods) were up 18% in the last quarter – driven by the Home Goods chain. Once again we are seeing positive trends from those retailers who are getting sales from consumers decorating, re-decorating and/or updating their homes.
