  • Brick & Mortar Retail sales forecast increased to 10.5% – 13.5%. Citing “greater than expected resilience in the economy and consumer spending”, the NRF revised sales growth from 6.5 – 8.2% to 10.5% – 13.5% for B&M Retail. Non-store and online sales growth remains unchained (18 – 23%).
  • Amazon to open its first Fresh supermarket with checkout-free technology. The 25,000 sq feet store will be opened in Washington, and give shoppers the option for either a traditional checkout or checkout-free experience.
  • Independent grocers nab 33% of US grocery sales. Sales increased ~94% between 2012 and 2020 versus overall U.S. grocery sales increasing 47% during the same time frame. That said, Independent is operating off a much smaller base ($254B vs $772B respectively) and would have a long road to catching up.
  • News for Good: General Mills, Mars, Target among brands committed to backing Black-owned media companies. 20+ brands have pledged to spend at least 2% of their total annual media budgets with black-owned media companies.
