Wednesday Eye-Opener II:  Eight Words That Define Retail Possibility

by Kevin Coupe

The new BBC series “Influential” recently featured an interview with chef/author Ina Garten, in which host Katy Kay asked her why she has become such an icon on social media.

Here’s what she said:

“Young people don’t have mom in the kitchen.”

Seems to me that those are eight magic words, offering all sorts of possibilities for retailers.

First of all, she’s right.  Young people aren’t learning how to cook in the way way that older generations have.  And yet, there seem to be more cooking shows, cooking sites and cookbooks than ever.

This is an opportunity for food retailers to make themselves part of the cooking ecosystem – not just selling product, but becoming a greater resource for shoppers who may want to learn how to cook.

So listen to Ina Garten.  Help shoppers not only figure out the possibilities, but learn how to act on them in Eye-Opening ways.

It won’t just be good for their aspirations.  It’ll actually be good for business.
