The third season of “Lupin” is out on Netflix, taking us into the escapades of gentleman thief Assane Diop, played by the great Omar Sy.  As in past seasons, “Lupin” plays out against the Parisian cityscape and Diop – who has modeled his life and criminal career on the fictional thief “Lupin” created by Maurice Leblanc and portrayed  in some 17 novels and 39 novellas in the early 20th century.

The first two seasons had as their hook Diop’s ongoing attempts to prove that his father was not a thief, which gave the show dramatic heft.  The third season seems a little light by comparison – while the stakes are high and the heists imaginative, it sometimes seems as if the writers are stretching ever so slightly to recapture the magic.  But Sy is fantastic, the supporting cast excellent, and Paris has never looked so beautiful.  If you’ve never seen “Lupin,” I’d suggest starting at the beginning;  if you have, I still think you’ll like it – and if nothing else, it sets up what should be a great season four.

My wine recommendation this week is the 2019 Blau Red Blend from Spain, a mix of 40% Cariñena, 40% Syrah, and 20% Garnacha that has a little bit of spice going for it but also is strong enough to stand up to a good grilled steak.

That’s it for this week.  Have a great weekend, and I’ll see you Monday.

Sláinte!!
