Target To Open New Sortation Center Near Detroit

The Detroit Free Press reports that “Target plans to open a distribution center for online orders in Detroit at the old State Fairgrounds off 8 Mile and near the new Amazon Fulfilment Center.”

The 180,000 square foot facility is expected to open next year, though Target has not confirmed that timing.

According to the Free Press, “The Target sortation center appears to be part of a broader development project at the old State Fairgrounds being undertaken as a joint venture between Detroit-based Sterling Group and Hillwood Development Co.

The new Amazon Fulfillment Center spans 3.8 million square feet and began initial operations this spring. An official ribbon-cutting ceremony for the massive building is planned for later this month.”

Interestingly, as the story points out, “Detroit has been without a Target store since 2003.”  However, it reportedly has been eyeing several locations in the metro areas for stores of various sizes.

The sortation center concept has been part of Target’s strategy for developing a shipping approach that groups boxes into denser, more efficient groups and allows for faster delivery to shoppers.

KC’s View:

I’m fully expecting a press release tomorrow from Sen. Tom Cotton in which he argues that opening a sortation center in Detroit is discriminatory against less ethnically diverse metropolitan areas, and threatens ‘significant and likely costly litigation’ unless Target changes its strategies and tactics.
