dunnhumby releases their annual Retailer Preference Index.

Amazon, HEB, and Market Basket take the top three spots in one of our favorite annual reports from dunnhumby. The report is filled with competitive knowledge and insights – including a key insight that “price” is now alone in the most importance customer preference driver. Previously, it belonged to both “price” and “quality”.

Home Chef gets a new CEO.

Home Chef was launched in 2013, acquired by Kroger in 2018, and will have a new CEO in 2022. Erik Jensen has been named CEO, following in founder Pat Vihtelic’s shoes. He has risen through the ranks at Home Chef, most recently as Chief Product Officer, and will report into Kroger’s Group VP of fresh merchandising.

Big Lots and Costco to open new stores in 2022.

The pendulum is swinging in the opposite direction as retailers look for brick and mortar expansion opportunities. Big Lots will open 50 stores and Costco 28 in 2022. According to the source, “Companies in the S&P 500 allocated $528.4 billion toward capital projects during the first nine months of 2021, or 11% more than during the comparable months of 2020”. Perhaps not surprising given the state of the world versus last year, but a trend to be on the watch for.
