Costco Tests Membership Card Scanning At Entry Doors

USA Today reports that several Costco stores are testing the use of greeters to scan customer membership cards when they enter, as a way of offering an”improved member experience.”

In the past, membership cards only were scanned at checkout;  they just had to show them to the greeter to get into the store.  “Adding ID checks at the store entrances will eliminate the need for them to be provided at checkout,” the story says.

USA Today writes that “the crackdown is a measure to protect a cornerstone revenue stream for Costco.

“Costco generated $4.6 billion in membership fees from nearly 128 million members, according to the company’s 2023 Annual Report.  The figure represented and 8% increase over 2022 and the company reported a 90% renewal rate.”

KC’s View:

It is greeters at the moment.  I suspect that down the road, it’ll be AI – in the same way that Sam’s Club is expanding the use of AI at exits so they don’t have to check every customer’s receipt.
