Chick-fil-A Opens Takeout-Only Location

Hawaii News Now reports that Chick-fil-A is opening a new store in Oahu, Hawaii – a takeout-only store that “will have three walk-up windows and two drive-thru lanes for customers to order their food.”

Dine-in service will not be available.

“This location marks the third Chick-fil-A to open in the islands, taking after both the Ala Moana Center and Kahului locations,” the story says, though it is the first one not to have instore seating.   “A Chick-fil-A in Kapolei is set to open sometime this year, while the opening date for a Chick-fil-A in Waikiki remains unknown.”

KC’s View:

I think these sorts of experiments are really positive (and I’m sure that Chick-fil-A execs will be happy to go check it out, probably in February).

I firmly believe that retailers that only build one format are locking themselves into a box that inevitably will inhibit their growth.  I’ve always though that traditional stores ought to find ways to play with different formats in different kinds of locations, just to see what works.  Focus groups and consultants can only take you so far;  especially now, when there is a lot of available commercial real estate in a lot of markets, it seems to me that deals can be made and tests can be run.

I always come back to the old Jeff Bezos dictum:  It isn’t an experiment if you know how it is going to turn out.

Meanwhile, I have to figure out a way to go visit that Oahu Chick-fil-A.  In February.
