Monday Eye-Opener: On The Job “With a Smile and a Lobster Suit”

by Kevin Coupe

I’m going to say this right up front – you need to find time to watch this video.

It is part of the New York Times video series, “On The Job,” which in this case spends a day with Amy O’Rourke, the assistant seafood manager at the Stew Leonard’s store in Yonkers, New York.

Amy O’Rourke is the employee that every food retailer should want.  The Times writes that “her goal as assistant seafood manager is not only to ensure that customers can find the freshest clams, shrimp and salmon, but also to make a job that can feel invisible, visible. She accomplishes that with an abundance of energy, an uncannily outgoing personality and occasionally, a lobster suit.”

The reporter on the piece, Priya Krishna, makes a critical point in the story – that O’Rourke (and her peers) are “essential.”  Not “essential” in the pandemic sense, when the term got tossed around a lot to describe some jobs, businesses and services.  But essential in the sense that they define the store, make a difference in the lives of the people she serves and the people with whom she works.

To me, that was the Eye-Opening aspect of this hugely illuminating video – O’Rourke believes (even if she does not express it this way) in her own essential-ness.  She is empowered to act on it.  And she ultimately is energized by it.

I repeat:  Watch this video.  And then ask yourself, how can I staff my business with dozens, hundreds, even thousands of people like Amy O’Rourke.
