Amazon’s Prime Day Goals:  Grow Grocery, Healthcare Businesses

From Business Insider:

“Amazon’s Prime Day this year isn’t just about buying kitchen gadgets or the latest consumer tech: The company is also trying to get you to visit one of their Amazon Fresh grocery stores.

“In the days leading up to Amazon’s Prime Day event on July 11 and 12, the e-commerce giant is offering 20% off purchases of at least $50 at its Amazon Fresh stores to Prime members, it said in a blog post Thursday. The discount increases to 25% on the 11th and the 12th, according to the company.

“Amazon is also offering 6% back to Prime members who use its Visa credit card at Amazon Fresh. Normally, cardholders earn 5% back.

“The deals are more substantial than what Amazon offered at Amazon Fresh on Prime Day in the past. In 2022, Prime members could get deals on specific products, ranging from bacon to Amazon-branded pita chips. An across-the-board discount wasn’t part of the offering last year, though. Amazon did not immediately respond to a request for comment from Insider.

“The latest deals also come as Amazon tries to find a path forward for its Fresh grocery stores. Amazon has opened roughly 44 Fresh stores in the US since 2020. But since then, it has closed some stores and put some new openings on hold.”

Meanwhile, TechCrunch reports that one of Amazon’s Prime Day deals is “an exclusive healthcare deal through One Medical, the primary care tech provider that the e-commerce giant acquired earlier this year. This is the first time that Amazon has added discounted healthcare to its selection of Prime Day deals.

“One Medical offers in-office, virtual and digital care services for issues like common illnesses as well as chronic care management and preventive care. Prime members in the U.S. can now get their first year of One Medical for $144 per year, compared to its typical annual membership cost of $199 (28% savings). The limited-time deal began July 6 and lasts through Prime Day.

“Giving members an exclusive discount for One Medical during Amazon’s biggest event of the year is a smart move for the company as it will likely boost its user base. One Medical reported a total of 836,000 members at the end of 2022. It’s also a notable decision for Amazon to begin awarding Prime subscribers with healthcare discounts.”

Prime Day takes place this week, July 11-12.

KC’s View:

One of my constant refrains in recent months has been that Amazon has been thinking small – rather than connecting the dots between its various businesses, it has been operating them in the kinds of silos that traditionally have inhibited growth and innovation at many of its more conventional competitors.

I just don’t understand why Whole Foods isn’t a part of this Prime Day construct – it has a much bigger footprint than Amazon Fresh, and could actually move the needle in terms of creating tangible and beneficial connections.
