Sam’s Club Receipt Checks To Be Done By AI

The New York Times reports that Walmart-owned Sam’s Club is going to begin replacing the folks who check customer receipts as they leave the store – the stores will begin using AI “to scan shoppers’ carts so they no longer have to show a receipt at the exit upon checking out.”

The move is designed to speed up the checkout process.  It currently is being used in 10 stores, but Sam’s Club leadership hopes to have it in place in all 600+ locations by the end of the year.

KC’s View:

Sounds like a perfect AI application to me – eliminating friction in a meaningful way for both the store and the shopper.
