Florida Politics reports that the state Senate has unanimously approved – one observer called it “the most popular bill of session” – a bill that would rename State Road A1A as Jimmy Buffett Highway, after the iconic singer who lost a four-year battle against cancer last year.
Florida’s House voted unanimously in favor of the bill last month.
Buffett was a longtime resident of Key West who used the state as a subject for many of his songs. Buffett’s fifth studio album, released in 1974, was, in fact, titled “A1A.”
A1A runs from Ferdinand Beach to Mile Marker 0 in Key West.
The bill now goes to the desk of Governor Ron DeSantis, who also is getting a bill that would introduce a new Buffett-themed license plate.
The story notes that “the bill directs the Florida Department of Transportation to place the first marker along the to-be-renamed highway by Aug. 30, the first Friday before Labor Day. That action is a nod to Buffett’s classic song, ‘Come Monday,’ which references a Labor Day Weekend show.”
This makes me happy. I am, after all, a guy who devoted an entire MNB to Buffett shortly after his passing.
While we live in a world where, in so many ways, “the wind is blowin’ harder now, 50 knots or there abouts,” it is nice and even Eye-Opening to know that politicians can come together to honor Buffett, whose work and life continues to influence so many of us.
