Tesla Building Diner/Drive-In Movie/Charger Facility In Hollywood

Axios reports that “Tesla is rapidly constructing a planned 1950s-style diner and drive-in movie theater in Hollywood that will also be a Supercharger station with 32 charging stalls.  The company isn’t showing its cards at this moment, with few details available about how it will be configured and when it might be scheduled to open.  But, approvals from the L.A. Department of Building and Safety indicate that the company is acting on comments made by CEO Elon Musk almost six years ago.

KC’s View:

There also is no information about whether Tesla might be planning to expand the concept to other locations.   But, as Axios notes, “If the country’s dominant electric vehicle (EV) maker plans to use its first public restaurant as a national blueprint, it could augur the start of a chain of charge-and-dine stations, which would be a new retail category.”

While there seems to be a pause taking place in the commitments being made to EVs by other manufacturers, I think it is a fair bet that inevitably the percentage of electric vehicles is going to grow around the country.  This is going to happen first in California, where the state government has mandated that no new internal combustion-powered vehicles can be sold there after 2035.  (I suspect that reality could make that date slide a bit, but the goal is there.)

What worries me about Musk is that he’s going to pretty much own the supercharging industry around the country – kudos to him for getting there first – but will use that dominance to force people to use his execrable X platform to make payments for using his chargers.
