The Innovation Conversation:  Walmart’s Tech Agenda For Adaptive Retail

The continuing goal of “The Innovation Conversation” is to explore some facet of the fast-changing, technology-driven retail landscape and how it affects businesses and consumers. It is, we think, fertile territory … and one that Tom Furphy – a former Amazon executive who led the team that developed Amazon Fresh, and currently CEO and Managing Director of Consumer Equity Partners (CEP), a venture capital and venture development firm in Seattle, WA, that works with many top retailers and manufacturers – is uniquely positioned to address.

Today, Tom and KC analyze the keynote presentation by Walmart CEO Doug McMillon at the recent Consumer Electronics Show.  McMillon offered an expansive vision of the retailer’s future, focusing on its determination to put technology at the service of its employees and customers, rather than having people serve technology for technology’s sake.  His presentation emphasized areas that included automatic replenishment, frictionless checkout, and drone delivery, and it created a challenge for every other retailer – most of them less deeply resourced than Walmart – to partner with tech providers in ways that create their own ecosystems for people-first systems.
