Kroger and Albertsons will likely need to sell off large numbers of stores to get approval from the Federal Trade Commission for the merger of the two companies. Amazon.com, which is targeting grocery to gain market share, is a logical suitor for the properties. “In theory, Amazon could plug acquired stores into its network, which would (potentially at least) prove less painful and costly than building a distribution and logistics network from scratch,” wrote analysts from Bernstein.
