Instacart will now accept payments via Medicare Advantage, Medicaid, and other eligible programs.

Administered through health care provider Alignment Health, the program will allow those who have health care coverage under Medicare Advantage, Medicaid, and other programs to use their plan-sponsored funds to receive eligible groceries, over-the-counter medication, and other items through Instacart.

“Through partnerships and innovative health plans, we can make grocery delivery via Instacart available for health plans to offer as a supplemental benefit,” said Instacart Vice President and General Manager for Health Sarah Mastrorocco. “And by offering more payment options, seniors will have even more flexibility and control over how they pay for their groceries.”

Instacart said the move is intended to improve food and medication availability to seniors, who the company says can experience food insecurity due to transportation issues or a strained income.

In August, Instacart announced that consumers would be able to use SNAP debit cards (via the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) to buy groceries online in all U.S.states. It marked the first time an online grocery delivery service accepted SNAP nationwide and in Washington, D.C.
