2021 ‘record’ year for small e-commerce retailers

It’s been a robust year for many small to medium e-commerce companies, according to a Sendlane survey, but some SMBs remain concerned about the economy and the impact of COVID-19 on consumer spending.

The survey, “eCommerce Health,” also reported that a top trend ahead is the willingness of big e-commerce brands, such as Amazon, Target and Walmart, to partner with smaller retailers.

Another trend will be an increase in consumers shopping with mobile devices, according to a release on the survey findings.

SMB e-commerce companies generally are very optimistic about 2022, according to the survey, and 93% expect sales to grow, with 28% anticipating at least 40% growth. Ninety-two percent believe profits also will grow, with 24% expecting a 40% increase at least.

“The past year has been an exciting and complicated time for e-commerce,” Jimmy Kim, CEO of Sendlane, said in the release. “Certainly the pandemic has accelerated the shift to online shopping, but consumer buying habits were moving in this direction well before COVID, too. What really stands out about our 2021 eCommerce Health study is that 53% of respondents believe the state of e-commerce is ‘strong,’ and 39% believe it is ‘very strong.’ This tells me that despite the concerns related to the economy, shipping issues, cyber fraud, etc., e-commerce retailers are in a great position to succeed in 2022.”
