1. Data & Insights

“It’s the most wonderful time of the year”

No, not the holidays. Spotify Wrapped 2023 came out this week and on top of that it was ChatGPT’s first birthday yesterday. My passions collided this week, GenAI, data analysis, data visualization and music! Needless to say, several of my nerd itches were scratched.

If you aren’t familiar with Spotify Wrapped, it happens once a year where Spotify provides an analysis and some fantastic data visualizations of a person’s listening habits for the year. This year the visualizations were very cool. (please don’t judge my music tastes)

So, after I spent a ton of time nerding out reviewing my musical year, I thought, “what would ChatGPT / DALL-E have to say about it”, so I asked it to analyze and visualize my listening habits in a few different styles. Amazing results (after a couple iterations)!

For those who are interested in doing the same. I utilized exportify.net to export my 2023 top playlist (from Spotify Wrapped). I then uploaded that spreadsheet into ChatGPT, then provided some additional details from my wrapped.

  • How many genres
  • How many songs
  • How many minutes listened.
  • How many different artists
  • Top Genres
  • Top Artists
  • Top Songs

Next I asked ChatGPT/Dall-E to visualize my listening habits.

<<ChatGPT Prompt>>

Act like a graphic design artist specializing in music and album covers.  Utilizing the Spotify Wrapped 2023 data and my listening habits above create an abstract graffiti-style visualization ensuring there are no words or text.  Use abstract, graffiti elements to symbolize music genres and artists.

Make the number of elements commensurate with my listening habits in genres and artists, the more listened the more elements it gets.

  1. Rock – Use Electric Guitars, Drum Sets to represent this genre
  2. Hip Hop – use turn tables, microphones, and boom boxes to represent this genre
  3. Singer – Songwriter – Use Acoustic guitars, and pianos to represent this Genre
  4. Progressive Bluegrass – Utilize banjos and harmonicas for icons for Bluegrass
  5. Classic Rock – Utilize acoustic guitars, vinal records, and keyboards to represent this Genre

Representations of bands and artists should be highly abstract and artistic. The overall artwork should be a vivid, graffiti-inspired expression, focusing on color and form rather than literal representations.

Here are 4 examples of what it produced, let me know which you like best.  Thanks for reading.
