Walgreens to lay off 10% of its corporate staff

DEERFIELD, Ill. — Walgreens said this week that it will cut more than 500 jobs, most of them at the company’s Deerfield headquarters and its Chicago office.

About 504 employees — or about 10% of the corporate staff — will be laid off, Walgreens spokesman Marty Maloney confirmed, adding that the cuts will not impact staff at WBA’s stores, micro fulfillment centers, or call centers.

“We’re grateful for the many contributions by the team members who will be leaving our organization and are committed to supporting them as much as possible during this transition,” Maloney said.

He added that the job cuts are not connected to the company’s financial liabilities. The company recently posted a major operating loss in the first quarter as it pays out $6.5 billion in settlements related to the nationwide opioid crisis.

In a message to employees, CEO Rosalind Brewer says the company is cutting the workers “to drive sustainable cost savings to help fuel investments for future growth. . . .While difficult, these changes are necessary to streamline our business, unlock value and support our long-term goals.”
