After a couple of seasons on CNN, actor-writer Stanley Tucci is bringing his acclaimed travel series to the National Geographic channel, which can be found on Disney+.
Renamed “Tucci In Italy,” the five-part series “follows Tucci across Italy’s stunning landscapes as he explores the deep connections between food, culture and history. More than a travelogue, it’s a rich, narrative-driven dive into the country’s iconic culinary traditions. Along the way, Tucci meets locals, chefs, artisans—and even cowboys—to uncover hidden gems and untold stories … Tucci indulges in a Sienese feast in Tuscany, samples farm-to-table innovation in Lombardy, and rediscovers Lazio’s rustic soul.”
KC’s View:
Tucci’s previous efforts were guaranteed to make viewers hungry and thirsty; it did both for me, as well as prompting me to look for my passport. So I’m really looking forward to this iteration.
It is possible that the new series won’t occupy the same space in terms of prompting food-centric conversation – Sunday nights on CNN may have given it a higher profile than the Disney+/National Geographic placement. (I could be wrong about this, but won’t know it until some of the viewership numbers are made public. CNN decided to step away from the highly rated series because of what I think was a misguided decision by management to not do original documentary series.)
But retailers ought to pay attention – the kinds of foods and wines that are featured on “Tucci in Italy” may open a door for them to engage their own shoppers in food-centric conversations that could bolster sales.
