The grocery chains picked up some momentum today, making some interesting moves and perhaps giving a slight nod as to where they are going.

Kroger might be showing their cards a bit, as they name a new president for HomeChef. We fully expect this to be a powerhouse brand in very short time, on a similar path like what Kroger did with the Simple Truth brand.

Meijer is planning a new store format in Michigan. The new 90,000 square foot store, which is half the size of the normal footprint, will offer both food and general merchandise. To us, it feels like the dunnhumby effect is already pushing Meijer to get smarter about store formats and the offerings within.

And not wanting to be left out of a heavy grocery news day, Albertson’s rolls out their loyalty program across its banners.

And finally, Walmart and Amazon look to Rx as the next potential growth vehicle. Albeit they are doing it differently, we will be watching this one closely.
