Peak Season Picks + Peak Freshness + Peak Flavor = Peak Retailing

Got an email with a video link from Dorothy Lane Market yesterday, in which the company explained, “We celebrate fruits and vegetables throughout the seasons, meaning that we want produce at its best. Peak season picks mean peak freshness and flavor! This is an important distinction when it comes to The DLM Experience with our Produce department, and accomplishing it all comes down to relationships. Just as each and every crop that bears fruit or vegetables is carefully nurtured by its farmers, we seek to nurture relationships that share our quality values.

“Our search sometimes takes us just a short drive away to a local farming friend to find sweet corn bursting with flavor in the heat of summer or stunning artisan pumpkins coming in a myriad of colors and textures. Other times, it takes us across the country to the orchards of the West Coast to find prized Comice pears grown in Hood River Valley, Oregon, and premium apples and cherries of Wenatchee, Washington. We are looking for apples and cherries that are larger in size, peaches and pears that are tree-ripened and hand-packed, and farms that are backed by families who value best practices.”

KC’s View:

We talk a lot here on MNB about why it is important for food stores to actually be food stores.  When it comes to celebrating food and communicating about food – and doing so with passion and specificity – nobody does it better than Dorothy Lane Market.

I’m not saying that everyone can or should be Dorothy Lane Market.  But passion is contagious, and when a retailer feels it and shares it, the shopper starts to feel it, too.  And doesn’t really want to shop anyplace else, because everyplace else feels like a pale imitation.
