OffBeat:  Out Of Many, One Terrific TV Series

Just a quick one for you today…

“Pluribus,” on Apple TV, is one of the most interesting, provocative and entertaining series that I’ve seen in some time.  Now, I’ve only seen two episodes – they drop on Fridays – but I am totally hooked on this mind-bender of a narrative.

I am trying to figure out the best way to explain “Pluribus” without ruining it for you;  so much of the pleasure comes from watching it unfold slowly and deliberately, and yet with a kind of urgency that makes one hungry for the next installment.  So let me just explain it this way: Rhea Seehorn plays a misanthrope who has to deal with the fact that pretty much everybody else on Earth is happy.  It isn’t pretty.  More than that, you won’t get from me, but you can watch the trailer here.

“Pluribus” comes from Vince Gilligan, who gave us “Breaking Bad” and “Better Call Saul,” and also was a force behind “The X Files.”  Which is to say, “Pluribus” can be very serious but also very funny, and always thoughtful.  On this last point, let me quote the New York Times review:

The title “Pluribus,” from the Latin motto that Americans are used to seeing on the back of quarters, might suggest that this is a political series. It’s not overtly, but it engages a lot of questions about how society is best ordered.

Is individualism more important than harmony? Is self-expression more important than peace? Is it better to be free or safe? You could take this inquiry in a lot of ideological directions: a progressive critique of authoritarianism, a libertarian defense of the individual, a conservative broadside against communitarian utopianism.

That’s a lot to absorb.  Suffice it to say that I have no idea where it is going, and that I suspect you’ll get totally hooked, just like I am.

That’s it for now.  See you next week.

Sláinte!!
