OffBeat:  Elbows Up, Canada!

So the World Series begins tomorrow, with the Los Angeles Dodgers facing off against the Toronto Blue Jays.  I am disappointed that the Seattle Mariners still have not made it to the World Series, but as they say in baseball, Wait ’till next year.

The Dodgers have to be considered the prohibitive favorites, but I certainly hope that the Blue Jays make it competitive and even make them sweat a little bit – another seven game playoff series would be wonderful.  And, while I have a soft spot for the Dodgers, I must admit to being a little bit hopeful that my Canadian brothers and sisters enjoy a terrific week or so of baseball.

(I also have soft spot in my heart for Toronto and the Blue Jays.  In 1993, my friend Jim Roxbury and I went up there for the first two games of the Blue Jays’ World Series against the Philadelphia Phillies, and had what I long have called one of the best non-marital weekends of my life.  I’ll tell you about it sometime.)

Elbows Up, Canada!

I’ve had a lot of Oregon Pinot Noirs from the Willamette Valley over the years, but it always is nice to have a new one – which is what happened the other evening when friends brought over a 2023 Illahe Pinot Noir, which was wonderfully smooth and balanced.  Just lovely.  I served it with pappardelle mixed with a fresh bolognese.  Pretty good, if I do say so myself.

We also enjoyed the 2023 Unshackled, from the Prisoner Wine Company in California’s Central Valley, a lovely blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Merlot, Malbec, Petit Verdot, Cabernet Franc.  Just delicious – thick and mouth-filling and perfect with a nice medium rare petite filet.

Yum.

That’s it for now.   See you next week.

Sláinte!!
