CBS Sunday Morning did a piece yesterday that profiled Wegmans, highlighting its unusual approach to management, dedicated focus on food, and voluntary limits on future growth. Fascinating stuff, and you can watch it here:
KC’s View:
One of the things that is intriguing about Wegmans is its ability to have a real presence and commitment to quality food, and still remain resolutely mainstream with enormous mass appeal. That’s one of the things that the CBS story makes abundantly clear – and it may be that this ability rests in a respect for its shoppers. Wegmans’ largely successful gamble has been that Americans don’t prefer lowest common denominator food – a bet that most of its competitors won’t or don’t make.
And yet, I think Wegmans proves every day that it is a bet worth making.
