Yesterday was June 10. Still spring. More than a week until summer, and months from fall.
And yet, Pottery Barn thought it was a perfect time to send me the following email:
KC’s View:
It is more than 140 days until Halloween. Way, way too early for anyone to be selling Halloween merchandise. At least, in my not-so-humble opinion.
I think this is the kind of stuff that makes consumers crazy. (At least, this consumer.) A lot of people’s kids haven’t even gotten out of school yet, much less embarked on summer vacations. Hitting their parents with this mind of stuff is at the very least, inconsiderate.
Seems to me that this had an idea generated by some marketer who was thinking about how to goose some early Halloween sales, not about how shoppers think or feel.
I can only see one way that this email would be a good idea – if Pottery Barn had explained that this was a “beat the tariffs” sale, offering low prices on Halloween merchandise brought into the US before these extra taxes can be imposed on shoppers.
Now, that would be both a trick and a treat.
