Dick’s Expands Reach into Outdoor Category with Acquisition of Moosejaw from Walmart

Dick's Sporting Goods acquires Moosejaw from Walmart.

Dick’s Sporting Goods has agreed to acquire outdoor retailer Moosejaw from Walmart for an undisclosed amount. The deal is expected to close in March 2023.

The acquisition expands Dick’s outdoor portfolio — currently led by Public Lands, which Dick’s launched in 2021 — and reaffirms the retailer’s “commitment to the long-term business opportunity in the growing multibillion-dollar outdoor category,” the company said in a statement.

Moosejaw, which was founded in Michigan in 1992, operates an ecommerce platform as well as brick-and-mortar locations in Arkansas, Colorado, Illinois, Kansas, Michigan and Missouri. Walmart acquired the company for $51 million in 2017, a time when it was snapping up a number of ecommerce businesses in a bid to compete with Amazon. The company has since changed tacks and offloaded or closed many of those businesses, including Jet.com, which it discontinued in 2020, and now Moosejaw.

Public Lands also has a strong ecommerce presence and has grown to seven retail locations since its 2021 debut.

“We admire what Moosejaw has accomplished over the past 30 years as leaders in the outdoor industry and look forward to the opportunity to share insights and learn from one another,” said Todd Spaletto, President of Public Lands and SVP at Dick’s Sporting Goods in a statement. “We believe there’s potential to grow the Moosejaw business and provide compelling experiences and an expanded product assortment to its millions of loyal customers.”

Once the acquisition closes, Moosejaw CEO Eoin Comerford will report to Spaletto.
