Retailers continue to push into Healthcare, Instacart gets another C-Suite addition, and Market Volatility in today’s top stories:
Dollar General hires a Chief Medical Officer. With other retailers pushing into the medical space, Dollar General has made their move with this latest hire. Dollar General has 17,400 stores across the country, including many in rural areas that don’t have many other grocers or major pharmacies nearby—they may have identified a true niche.
CVS Health’s recently released “Health Care Insights Study 2021” gives clues on where retailers pushing into the medical space can focus. The study, surveying both consumers and providers, shows how perspective is changing. New avenues of care are being realized and health goals are taking more of a priority. Routine care is changing too, with a shift away from primary care to other health care resources (ie. Online, community health centers, and pharmacies).
Walgreens expands same-day Rx delivery to nearly all stores, seven days a week. Walgreens is on a roll, building out convenient customer offerings (two hour, same day delivery for retail products and digital retail and healthcare services). This move focuses on giving patients quick and easy option for managing their health.
Instacart gains a CEO. Fidji Simo, previously the head of Facebook’s app, will become CEO. At Facebook since 2011, she has grand visions for Instacart and building it into “an incredible consumer app”. She has her sights focused on as a food destination app and will embrace “Instacart’s growing advertising and enterprise businesses”.
Online grocery sales decline demonstrates volatile market. In May, Grocery eComm fell to $7B, their lowest in a year. Not surprising, given the lockdown restrictions easing. Brick & Click cautions against reading too much into monthly changes, as the dynamics are changing so quickly. Wise words, Bill.
