Per our weekly QuickWit, on the dichotomy of the holiday season with predicted high demand but supply challenges due to labor and supply chain challenges, the holiday’s are upon us and the holiday hiring is in full swing!

Walmart, Kroger and Target announcing their needs for hundreds of thousands of associates.

  • Walmart: 150,000
  • Target: 100,000
  • Kroger: 20,000

Target, trying to win holiday hiring announced they are paying associates $2 an hour more during peak holiday sales days.

Kroger announced today their second nationwide hybrid hiring event intending on hiring 20,000 new associates.

Walmart announced last week that that they are ramping up for what is expected to be a particularly busy holiday season and is planning to hire 150,000 associates and at the same time giving current associates the opportunity to work extra hours during the holiday as well.

There is an obvious need but the question and challenge remains who will win in hiring new associates during the current massive labor shortage, and even if they can hire will they have product to put on the shelf with all of the supply challenges we are seeing.

Just last week FMI reported that 80% of food retailers say hiring issues are hurting their business.  Despite retailer’s best efforts boosting worker incentives & pay, food retailers saw an overall turnover rate of 58% last year, up from 40% in 2019.
