This is the last MNB for 2025. I’ll be taking time off through the end of the year, with MNB scheduled to return on Monday, January 5. But for the moment, I have some thoughts.
Let me leave you with a passage that I long have quoted at this time of year, from Robert B. Parker’s “Silent Night,” the only Christmas-themed novel that he wrote in the voice of his iconic Boston private detective Spenser – and, in fact, some of the last sentences he wrote before his passing:
“I liked the myth elements of Christmas. The way in which its origins reach back far beyond Jesus, to the rituals of people unknown to us. The celebration of the winter solstice. The coming of light in the darkest time. And with it the promise of spring to come and beginning again. I liked it better than Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer.”
Pretty much the way I feel.
